How to Embrace Colourful Christmas Decorations

How to Embrace Colourful Christmas Decorations

At this time of year, many of us are getting ready to mark the beginning of the festive season by embellishing our homes with beautiful ornaments, tinsel, garlands, lights and colourful Christmas trees. While it’s traditional to select a palette of rich reds, greens and golds, consider embracing colour to bring seasonal joy and cheer to your home.

We’ve partnered with Rose & Grey to provide colourful festive inspiration for the most wonderful time of the year.

Bring colour to your festive decorating

Many see Christmas as the time to emulate classic colour palettes with sumptuous berry reds, rich greens and warm golds. These colours will certainly deliver a nostalgic and timeless atmosphere. However, you may prefer to use decorations that are more in-keeping with your personal style.

For homes with a contemporary feel, consider bold and bright coloured Christmas decorations that will complement your existing schemes. These lighter, brighter tones will create a lively atmosphere to reflect this busy and convivial time of year.

Draw inspiration from your current wall colours

If you have already created a beautiful, cohesive colour scheme in your home, opt for festive decorations that coordinate with your existing wall colours. This approach may mean choosing coloured baubles or ornaments that you wouldn't have considered previously. But these seasonal embellishments will enhance your overall scheme rather than detract from it.

Consider tried and tested colour combinations such as pink and green. This natural pairing will bring a more contemporary feel than traditional Christmas red and green. Rose & Grey decorated a backdrop of the elegant green, Sage Green, with a selection of pink-hued decorations. The team used a combination of magenta candlesticks and furnishings as well as soft pink statement pieces.

Introduce bold colour accents for added impact

As your decorations are on show only briefly, Christmas is a great time to step out of your comfort zone and introduce bold colour accents. Consider choosing a strongly contrasting yet complementary colour to your walls. Incorporate the colour throughout your seasonal decorations through details such as baubles or cocktail glasses. Pair muted green walls with a playful orange, or punctuate your scheme with impactful black and gold accents.

Choose versatile pieces that will stand the test of time

If you refresh your home décor often, opt for decorations that you can reuse each year to complement various schemes. With its neutral undertones, green pairs well with most other colours. Depending on the shade of green you choose, you can create a scheme that feels bold and contemporary or more pared back.

Consider punchy lime green candlesticks or serving dishes to enliven your Christmas dining table. You can surround these elements with baubles and ornaments to suit your personal style. These pieces could range from glitzy silver disco balls to antique treasures or colourful, contemporary designs. Green decorations are also a beautiful, failsafe accompaniment to traditional festive foliage such as wreaths, garlands and Christmas trees.

Update year on year with handmade decorations

Once you have a few staple pieces that you love, consider creating handmade decorations to add a new element to your scheme each year. Handmade decorations will add a personal touch to your Christmas setup and allow you to create something totally unique. Spend a creative afternoon crafting your own unique Christmas crackers or paper ornaments that complement your scheme.

As you can easily recycle these decorations, you can be bold and introduce daring colour combinations. For an elegant and striking look, consider light pink with red or sumptuous teal with mint.

Finish your scheme with lustrous accents

Whether you prefer classic or contemporary decorations, using lustrous accents will bring the perfect finishing touch to your scheme. Add an element of festive luxury by adorning your space with glistening tinsel, sparkly details and twinkling lights.

For a warm, cosy and enchanting ambience, opt for gold accents and lighting. Gold is the perfect choice to combine with warmer colours or deep and sumptuous hues, such as our ‘Sweet Treats’ neutrals. Gold also teams beautifully with soft greens such as Normandy Grey, as seen in this scheme from Rose & Grey.

Alternatively, a touch of silver and blue sparkle will evoke a cool and contemporary winter wonderland. Silver tinsel or lighting is the perfect partner to a bright south-facing room painted in a cool blue, white or grey.
