If you’re looking to channel your creativity this festive season, the dining room is the perfect place to focus on. It’s the heart of the home at Christmas, so create an inviting setting where your guests can make some magical memories.

Furniture and Homeware brand Rose & Grey have provided their best tips for adding some festive cheer to your Christmas dining table. From traditional Christmas colours to contemporary touches, introduce these Christmas decorating ideas to elevate your festive scheme this season.

Christmas table inspiration

Embrace maximalism on your dining table

If you usually prefer minimalist interior design schemes, Christmas is the perfect time to step outside of your comfort zone and make a statement.

There’s no such thing as too many decorations at Christmas. There’s always space to squeeze in small candleholders or dot a few baubles between place settings. Or, simply add a sparkly fringed trim to the edge of your table.”

Warm neutral dining room walls provide a blank canvas upon which to introduce bold festive elements. @six_by_the_sea style their Portland Stone dining room with a seasonal colour palette of deep berry reds and gold accents. Leafy, botanical elements and quirky accessories create an eye-catching centrepiece for the Christmas table setting.

Be bold with colour at Christmas

Rich reds and greens are abundant at Christmas time. For an updated Christmas feel, surprise guests with a fun and contemporary colour scheme featuring a variety of bold shades.

“Rather than sticking to tried and tested Christmas colour schemes, embrace bright and joyful colours to add a party atmosphere to your tablescaping. Here, we used a simple white tablecloth and added colour through vibrant crockery, fun crackers and napkins and plenty of vibrant accessories and decorations.”

@ourlayeredhome’s dining space is a real celebration of colour. She pairs Hellebore walls with the punchy Re:mix Yellow-Pink on the ceiling for a joyful entertaining space.

@beetrootandblack achieves this bold, contemporary take on the classic Christmas colour palette using our dark grey-green, Pompeian Ash. She incorporates warm, ambient accessories for a sophisticated dining space with plenty of impact.

Experiment with trends

When it comes to decorating your home with paint and wallpaper, it’s always best to follow your personal style rather than current trends. But Christmas is a great opportunity to experiment in small ways, as the decorations are only in place temporarily. Trying new things with your seasonal decoration might even provide some unexpected inspiration for your next design project.

“A table setting for a special occasion, such as Christmas, is the perfect way to embrace trend-led elements that you may not want to bring into your house in more permanent ways. Try adding contrasting bright colours, scalloped trims and bold stripes through small touches such as your choice of napkins, tableware and decorations.”

Add a little sparkle with baubles

Don’t worry, if you can’t find the perfect Christmas centrepiece to enchant your guests. Use your imagination and repurpose other festive items that will embellish your Christmas table.

“Baubles aren’t just for the tree! Try placing colourful and sparkly baubles on your Christmas table – either in a bowl for a centrepiece display, on each plate setting as a party favour, or dotted around the table to spread a little joy.”

Make each place setting bespoke

If you’re hosting this year, give your guests a warm welcome by adding a bespoke touch to each place setting in turn. From classic candy canes and rustic pine cones to more contemporary accessories, there are a myriad of ways you can enhance each table setting to complement the rest of your scheme.

“Pair contrasting side plates and dinner plates, placing a colourful napkin on each setting. Here, we rolled the napkins to show off the scalloped trim, secured with a statement napkin ring and added a sprig of rosemary. Other suggestions to make your place settings stand out could be to handwrite a place card and menu for each guest. Or place a party favour on each plate, such as a decoration or small gift.”
