A traditional, alkyd-based paint for use on interior or exterior surfaces. Flows to a smooth, hard wearing, high gloss finish resistant to repeated washing and condensation. Ideal for use in kitchens and bathrooms. Conforms to BS 7664.

Surfaces

Suitably primed woodwork, primed steel and non-ferrous metals, pretreated galvanised metal. Can also be used on suitably prepared plaster and cementitious surfaces.

Technical Information

Preparation

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from loose and flaking material, dirt, grease etc. Repairs should be carried out prior to painting. Areas contaminated with fungal or algal growth should be treated with a proprietary fungicidal wash or with 25% household bleach before painting. Surfaces previously treated with gloss paint should be lightly abraded before painting. Highly alkaline surfaces should be primed with an alkali-resisting primer. For maximum protection a coat of Universal Primer Undercoat is recommended after priming.

Application

Stir well before use. May be applied without thinning by brush, roller or airless spray. Up to 2% thinning with White Spirit should be carried out to ease application under cold conditions. Apply 1 or 2 coats as required.

Clean up

Equipment should be cleaned with white spirit immediately after use.

Precautions

Always read the can label before use. Ensure maximum ventilation during application and drying. Do not apply below 5°C. Drying will be slower below 10°C.

A tough, quick drying multi-surface acrylic gloss paint for use in many interior or exterior applications. Dries to a smooth subtle gloss finish with excellent covering power and adhesion. Recommended for use in kitchens and bathrooms. Compared to traditional gloss paints it has a much lower odour during application and drying.

Suitably primed woodwork, primed iron and steel surfaces, MDF, aluminium, copper and PVC. Ideal for kitchens and bathrooms and for use on radiators.

A range of 47 colourways over eight designs London Wallpapers are inspired by historical documents in the English Heritage archive. All the papers are spongeable and are printed by a variety of methods including surface print and flock.

Surfaces

Internal walls and ceilings.

Technical Information

Preparation

Existing wallcoverings and linings must be removed. Surfaces must be clean, dry and smooth. Mould contamination must be treated with a proprietary mould cure wash before decorating. New plaster or other absorbent surfaces should be pre-treated with a fungicidally protected adhesive or ‘size’. Gloss painted surfaces need to be roughened with sandpaper. If lining paper is used it should be hung horizontally.

Hanging

Use Little Greene Ready Mixed Wallpaper Paste in accordance with the instructions on the pack
1. Measure 50cm (20”) out from a corner on a wall adjacent to a window wall and use a plumb line to draw a vertical line from ceiling to floor.
2. Cut the rolls of wallcovering to the required length allowing for pattern match and trimming.
3. Apply paste evenly ensuring that the edges are covered. (NB: for non-woven papers follow instructions on the label to paste the wall)
4. Fold, keeping the pasted side against itself, and leave to soak for 5 minutes.
5. Slide into position aligning one edge of the wallpaper to the vertical line. The other edge should overlap around the corner by 20mm (½”). Smooth away air bubbles with a brush starting from the centre and squeezing out to the edge. Take care to ensure that you do not transfer paste from the wall onto the surface of the paper.
6. Trim top and bottom.
7. Repeat process with other lengths, butting edges together and matching pattern as necessary. Use a vinyl overlap adhesive where slight overlapping is unavoidable.
8. Wipe away any surplus paste immediately ensuring that you do not transfer paste from the wall onto the surface of the paper.
9. Ensure that you hang each length of wallpaper in the correct direction

Clean up

Equipment should be cleaned with clean water and a mild detergent immediately after use.

Precautions

Check all room lots for colour and batch codes. Check each length for faults/shading before hanging. After 2 or 3 lengths, check again. If a fault is found stop decorating and immediately report it to your retailer.
Claims can not be accepted for paper hung in excess of one roll where a fault could reasonably be recognised before hanging.

Quick Guidance for Painters

Make sure surfaces to be painted are dry sound and free from dirt and materials which would affect
the appearances and life of the paint.
Ensure glossy surfaces are abraded to provide a suitable key for new paint.
Remove all dust and debris from the surface as this will affect the look of the finished job.
When painting metals or alkaline substrates select the correct primer for the job.
Follow the guidance on the can regarding drying times and thinners.

How to prepare a room.

1. Roll up the carpet/rugs. Make sure furniture is covered and moved to centre
of the room. Put down a dust sheet or paper on the floor around the area you are painting.
2. Loosen or remove attached equipment (wall sockets etc.) and remove all switch plates, and door and
window furniture.
3. Make sure you remove all loose paint and plaster/wallpaper.
4. When painting over wallpaper make sure all seams are properly glued
5. Rake out and fill all cracks, screw holes, seams and imperfections with proprietary filler.
6. Sand smooth any repairs to walls
7. Before painting, sand all areas lightly.
8. Remove all dust and debris from walls using a damp cloth, tack cloths or vacuum the area.

Equipment to make a professional job of decoration.

Little Greene supply a selection of the most important tools you will require including:

9-inch Roller tray and Paint Roller: Rollers larger than nine inches are heavy, unwieldy, and
inaccurate. 4-inch rollers are handy for getting inside cabinets and cupboards. Select the correct roller
type for the surface you’re painting (check the label). As a general rule, the smoother the surface
you’re painting, the shorter the roller ‘pile’ you use.

Scraper: Use the point to pick out loose paint and cracked plaster; the flat top, to scrape loose paint.
Filling Knife: for the smooth application of filler to cracks and gaps

When working on ceilings or in cramped areas, decant a little paint from the can into a small, light
container. A clean plastic food-storage container with a tight-fitting cover is ideal for emulsion paint; a
metal can is better for oil based paint.

Brushes: Select proprietary brushes for the type of paint being used. Straight-edge brushes handle all
tasks nicely. Some people find angled brushes more comfortable in tight spots; and angled brushes are
especially good for painting trim and straight edges.

Reasons to prime the work before applying the finish coat.

1. To improve the look and performance of the finish coat.
2. To seal unpainted surfaces or to provide a more receptive surface for the finish coat.
3. To ease the transition from a dark to a light colour and to prevent stains from bleeding through the
finish coat.
4. To prepare a surface previously painted with alkyd paint for a new coat of emulsion paint.

Which primer undercoat?

Select either Little Greene Acrylic Primer Undercoat (water-based) or Universal Primer Undercoat
(oil-based) for all interior and exterior priming and sealing wallboard, concrete, brick, woodwork,
metals or plaster. Allow primer coat to dry overnight before painting. Clean up with white spirit.

How to paint a room.

1. Lay a flattened corrugated box on the floor and set out your tools and paint cans, its padded surface
will protect the floor and soak up any drips.
2. Decant some of the paint into a smaller, easy to handle container.
3. Load a 2- or 3-inch straight-edge brush. The correct way is to dip the bristles one-half to two thirds
of the way into the paint. Don’t get paint on the ferrule (the metal wrapper that holds the bristles).
Clear excess paint from one side to the brush by dragging it against the side of the container; don’t
drag both sides. Always apply the loaded side of the brush to the wall.
4. Working from the ceiling down, paint a 3-inch frame around all the edges of the room that would be
awkward to roll. Paint the corners; outline the ceiling; edge the skirting board and architraves to the
windows and doors, baseboard, light fixtures, plugs and switchplates. Painters call this ‘’cutting in’’
5. Let the paint dry. Now you are ready to use a roller to cover the large areas.
6. Slip the appropriate sleeve onto the roller cage (handle). Attach the roller extension handle.
7. Pour about an inch of paint into the deep reservoir end of the paint tray. Leave the other end of the
tray clear.
8. Dip the roller into the tray, and move it back and forth on the roller bed. The roller should be well
saturated with paint, but not dripping.
9. Once again, you will work from the ceiling down.
Roll an area about 2 feet square. Work the roller up, down, and across until you’ve covered the area
evenly. Cover the entire ceiling and wall this way, square by square.
10. If paint begins to build up on the wall at the edges of the roller, gently roll out the lines
immediately. Latex paint starts drying quickly, so don’t go back over tacky paint.
11. Watch out for “painters’ holidays” – patches where paint is too thin. If another coat is necessary,
allow the paint to dry properly before repeating.
12. Painting windows.
Try not to lay on paint too thickly, and avoid the edges where moving parts meet. Slide windows up
and down during the job to keep them from sticking shut.
13. Painting the trim. Work from ceiling to floor: picture rail first, skirting boards last. Hold brush
comfortably in your hand and take care not to overload it with paint.

Before painting skirting boards, do one final dusting. Once skirting boards are painted, close off the
room from dust, and let everything dry.

Cleaning Up

Cleaning brushes

Spirit thinned oil paints

Rinse brush thoroughly in a suitable container of White Spirit until free from paint. Press dry with
paper towels, and hang brush up to store.

Emulsion Paints

Because emulsion paint is water-based, cleanup requires only water and perhaps soap. Hold brushes
under warm running water to rinse off excess paint. Add a few drops of mild washing-up liquid if
necessary, and use a stiff brush to coax any remaining paint out of the bristles. Pat the washed brush
dry with paper towels. When possible, store brushes by hanging them.

Storing paint.

Always store paint tightly sealed in original container, out of extreme temperatures (not in the
basement or garage), and away from children.

Disposing of paint cans, waste paint, and cleaning solvents.

Check with your local authority waste disposal department about correct, responsible procedures.

A high opacity pure acrylic resin based paint for use on interior or exterior surfaces. Dries to a washable
silky satin finish with very low odour during application and drying. Recommended for kitchens and
bathrooms.

Surfaces

All common internal and external masonry surfaces including old plaster, plasterboard, cement render and
suitably primed interior wood and metals subject to low traffic. Not suitable for radiators.

necessary. One finishing coat will usually suffice on internal surfaces.

An exterior, water-based finish for traditional buildings, Limewash allows the structure to breathe so reducing dampness. By sinking into the surface and subsequently reacting with carbon dioxide it protects the substrate. Most effective on lime plaster, lime render and porous stone. Less effective on cement render and plaster.

Surfaces

Lime-based, cob houses or porous exterior surfaces. The chalky finish is unsuitable for internal surfaces.

Technical Information

Preparation

Surfaces should be brushed free of loose flaking particles, dirt etc. Areas contaminated with fungal or algal growth should be treated with a proprietary fungicidal wash or with 25% household bleach before painting. Best results are obtained if the first coat is applied to a dampened porous surfaced which will help to control suction.

Application

Stir well before use as Limewash is prone to soft settlement. Apply thinly by brush working well into cracks. Do not apply heavily as crazing may occur. Apply in dry conditions as the coating is sensitive to rain until cured.

Clean up

Equipment should be cleaned with water immediately after use.

Precautions

Limewash is caustic and may cause burns. Risk of serious damage to the eyes. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves. If splashes enter the eyes rinse immediately with clean water until completely removed and seek medical advice. Limewash is best used when fresh, within 7-14 days.

A tough polyurethane alkyd based semi-gloss finish with excellent wash and wear resistance, for concrete and wooden floors subject to light to medium traffic.

Resists most mild chemicals, detergents and oils. Prevents dusting of concrete floors..

Surfaces

Steel and non ferrous metals and wood properly prepared and primed. Concrete free of contamination, dust and efflorescence, and properly prepared and primed.

Not recommended for bitumen, asphalt, highly alkaline substrates, or chemically or mechanically hardened concrete.

Technical Information

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from loose and flaking material, dirt, grease etc. Repairs should be carried out prior to painting. Surfaces previously treated with gloss paint or two pack floor paints should be lightly abraded before painting.

Application

Stir well before use. First coats on unpainted concrete or wood should be thinned 10-20% with White Spirit to allow penetration into the substrate. May be applied without thinning by brush, roller or airless spray. Normally one thinned and two full coats are recommended for new floors. Light traffic can commence after 24-48 hours depending on drying conditions. Full cure 7-10 days.

A chalky, interior, water-based finish for walls, ceilings and fine plasterwork. Dries to a soft, matt finish which allows walls to breathe. Excellent covering power on porous surfaces although this depends on the degree of thinning. The finish is gently wipeable if required but is not recommended for contact areas or areas where condensation occurs.

Surfaces

Plaster, lime plaster, surfaces previously painted with oil-based or casein-based distempers. Not recommended for use on soft distemper. Unsuitable for use on non-porous surfaces such as oil-based paints or conventional vinyl-based emulsion paints. May be applied to slightly damp surfaces which can subsequently dry out.

Technical Information

Preparation

Surfaces should be clean, dry and free from loose or flaking material, dirt, grease etc. Areas contaminated with fungal growth should be treated with a 25% solution of household bleach or if the surface is softened significantly by water, the coating should be removed together with the fungal growth before painting.

Application

Stir well before use and apply using brush or medium pile roller. Do not apply heavily but build up covering power with extra coats as required. Not recommended for touching in small areas.

Clean up

Equipment should be cleaned with water immediately after use.

Precautions

Best if used up to 12 months from purchase. However if kept well sealed in a frost free environment it may last for several years. Do not use if material has become significantly thinner or malodorous.
